Gravel Rush

"Gravel Rush? The fight to protect rural communities from unchecked gravel mining" delves into the impacts of Ontario’s free-for-all approach to aggregate licensing in terms of its domino effect in rural communities, where one gravel mining application may give way to a gravel rush, contributing to an exodus of local residents and businesses and the erosion of rural landscapes, economies and ways of life.

Join the Reform Gravel Mining Coalition along with members of the Saugeen Preservation Society and Donnelly Law for insight into this disturbing trend, how communities are fighting back and how you can support their work.

Background:

When West Grey residents learned of a proposed gravel mine in January of 2023, they joined forces to defend their homes, beloved river and local tourism economy.

But by June 2023 they found themselves fighting not just one but three separate gravel mining applications in a two square kilometre area. Within a year, a prominent children’s camp in the footprint of the mining proposals had posted its property for sale, sparking fears of further land grabs by the gravel mining industry.
